Ever Part One

Ever was picked up on the side of the highway. The girl’s mother told her to just keep driving, but something made her stop. When she saw that trembling, dirty pitbull crouching down on her belly as she brought the car to a halt, she was filled with an immense sadness. There were three little bodies crowded around their mother, trying to squeeze their heads under her feet to block out the frightening world. But Ever was full of trust.

Under all of the scabs and scars and filth, she was shaking with joy. It shone out of her sweet face like a beacon. One of her sea green eyes was withered and white, and she would turn it away as if hide it from view. She gazed up at the girl with her one good eye and lolled her tongue out hopefully.

The girl sighed as she loaded them up in the back of her car. The puppies whined and yipped as she cranked the car up and pulled back onto the road, but Ever was quiet and calm. She knew she was in good hands. Now, the girl just had to figure out what to do with them. She knew she couldn’t keep them all as surely as she couldn’t leave them to starve to death on the side of the road. She phoned a friend who agreed to take one of the puppies, but no one else seemed interested in a sweet stray pitbull.

So, she called the local shelter even though it was late in the afternoon. She figured no one would answer, but someone picked up after a few rings. The person on the other end of the line listened as she explained her predicament and assured her that they would do everything they could to help her. The staff at Southern Pines was more than willing to stay a little late to help this good Samaritan get Ever and her pups safely tucked in for the night in a kennel of their own with fresh food and water. Ever never stopped smiling through the whole ordeal. She flopped down on her new bed as her pups crowded around her and panted happily. Before they flipped the lights in the kennels off, everyone stopped by to tell her good night.
When they were back in the parking lot and everyone was departing for the night, the woman stopped and thanked them. She told them that she’d only known Ever for a few moments, but she knew she was something special. She was content knowing that Ever was in capable and caring hands. She was content knowing that she had a chance at a new life, a shiny new life that seemed impossible back on the dusty road where she found her with her trembling pups.

The staff soon realized the woman was right. Ever is something special. There’s something about her goofy, gentle demeanor that captivates. But they also recognized that she was going to be hard to place. Many people come to the shelter to adopt, and some are even willing to take home an adult dog. But it would be an exceptional person indeed to fall madly in love with a one-eyed, roughed up, drooling from love pitbull who’s seen better days. So, they set out on a mission to find that exceptional person. Because Ever, just like every Yorkie and Labrador, deserves that kind of love.
